Greetings on this second evening of Session Two, after a full day of classes! The camp schedule is a busy one, intentionally structured to get the maximum amount of both fun and impact out of every day. Skill classes take up the bulk of each weekday during a two-week session, and Strong Rock offers 29 of them! There is definitely something for every camper to enjoy, no matter how they are interested in.
When Rambo and I were considering how to structure a summer camp program, we knew we wanted skill and confidence building through instructional classes to be a big part of it. There are many team sports classes offered, where physical skills and fitness, as well as how to work well with others for a common goal are practiced. It’s okay for there to be “winners” and “losers,” as life works that way and to be able to both win and lose with grace are necessary skills to have. There are creative and artistic classes offered for those who enjoy or want to learn about art, dance, singing, or theatre. Classes teaching about outdoor living, fishing, and shooting are confidence builders for every kid. The ones that teach a sport or skill that can be enjoyed as a life-long pursuit are often the ones kids haven’t had a lot of exposure to in everyday life or during a school day. They are often the ones they learn about at camp for the first time and end up taking home as a new pursuit, such as climbing, canoeing, or horseback riding.
We have another intentional element to skill classes on as well. Campers receive trustworthy instruction from a leader who cares to see them succeed and get better at something, and then that leader becomes someone who is trustworthy to teach them spiritual truths from Scripture. Building a life on God’s truth is the most important thing we can teach campers.
Skill classes at camp build both tangible and soft skills in kids, but by design they are also giving us a platform to teach even more vital spiritual truths. I can’t wait to get out there tomorrow and see what everyone is learning!
Goodnight from camp, where all is peaceful and at rest for the evening.
